The Honorable Janice Berg is a judge in the 247th Family District Court in Harris County, Texas. Judge Berg received her bachelor’s degree from Columbia University in 2003 and her JD from the University of Houston Law Center in 2008. Prior to her appointment, she represented Houston-area clients in family cases not only at the trial level but also in the Courts of Appeals and at the Texas Supreme Court.
Raised by a single mother, Judge Berg understands the impact that divorce can have on children. She believes that children need happy, healthy parents, not necessarily married parents. Janice also understands that families can be complicated; what works for one family may not work for another. These philosophies guided her in her practice as attorney and counselor and continue to do so as she serves the families of Harris County from the bench.
Judge Berg is committed to justice and equality outside of the courtroom as well. She held leadership positions in the Anti-Defamation League’s Glass Leadership Institute and is a member of their Civil Rights Committee and Associate Board. In the past, her involvement led her to travel to Washington, D.C. to lobby on ADL’s behalf in support of increased voting rights protections and robust refugee programs.
