William “Bill” Kunkle is a retired Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County. Prior to taking the bench, Bill served as partner at various Chicago area law firms. Early in his legal career, Bill served as an Assistant Public Defender for the Cook County Public Defender’s Office before eventually transitioning to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office where he served in several roles including Chief Deputy State’s Attorney and First Assistant State’s Attorney. Throughout his storied legal career, Bill was involved in several notable legal matters, including serving as the Chief Trial Prosecutor in People v. John Wayne Gacy, which resulted in Gacy being convicted for 33 murders, and sentenced to 12 death sentences and 21 life sentences without parole on March 13, 1980.
