ABA Section of Antitrust Law: Dialogue on Developments in African Consumer Protection Law

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is using the African Consumer Protection Dialogue to build cooperation and sharing of best practices among consumer protection agencies within Africa and the U.S. In this interview from the ABA Section of Antitrust Law Spring Meeting 2018, host Adam Biegel talks to Deon Woods Bell, Hugh Stevenson, Babatunde Irukera, David Ong’Olo, Atef Amin Yacoub, and Luyamba Mpamba Kapembwa about the consumer protection priorities and trends for Egypt, Nigeria, Zambia, and Kenya. From complaint resolution reform and consumer education to measure regulation and consumer protection, each country has different goals that they’re working to achieve with the help of the FTC.

Adam Biegel leads Alston & Bird’s Washington, D.C., Antitrust Team and is co-chair of the firm’s antitrust team.

Deon Woods Bell is counsel for international consumer protection at the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, in its Office of International Affairs.

Hugh Stevenson is the deputy director for International Consumer Protection in the Federal Trade Commission’s Office of International Affairs.

Babatunde Irukera is the director general/chief executive of the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) in Nigeria.

David Ong’olo is the chairman of the Competition Authority of Kenya.

Atef Amin Yacoub is the Chairman of the Consumer Protection Agency of Egypt.

Luyamba Mpamba Kapembwa is the director of mergers and monopolies for Zambia.
