Since 2018, John Mudd has served as Executive Director and General Counsel of the State Bar of Montana, an organization that includes all of Montana’s licensed attorneys. In that role, he leads a dedicated team supporting more than 5,500 members statewide. John has a front-row seat to the workings of Montana’s courts and a deep understanding of the vital role attorneys play in upholding both the Montana and United States Constitutions and strengthening the rule of law.
Before joining the State Bar, John held leadership roles in both Helena and Washington, D.C., including Executive Counsel for the Montana State Auditor, Secretary of the Montana Senate, and Special Assistant Attorney General. He also spent seven years directing fundraising and alumni relations for the University of Montana’s Alexander Blewett III School of Law, where he led record-setting campaigns and helped expand the school’s national network of alumni and supporters.
Earlier in his career, John practiced law in Missoula, representing individuals and businesses in civil disputes. He has served on the boards of the Montana Justice Foundation, the Max S. Baucus Institute, and the national Institute for Well-Being in Law, and is a frequent speaker and writer on legal ethics, professionalism, and attorney well-being.
John is a graduate of The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and earned his law degree from the University of Montana School of Law.
